PostSubject: Tuna from a yak   Tuna from a yak EmptyFri Jan 22, 2010 1:08 pm

While I was striper fishing this past fall off cape may I was thinking about the the bluefin that weren't too far away. Any of you folks fished for tuna off a yak? If they are too far off I could throw the yak in the boat but I was hoping to be able to find them close enough that I could paddle out(a few miles). Anyone into this?

Kickintail has been out there. I know that thry shuttled out tho. Caught alot too.
As far as finding the fish rom the beach in a yak, that seems tough. I watched a
20 -30 # Blue fin wash up un the beach alive 2 years ago. Someone ran over and
grabbed it despite the protests. Now I'm curious, who has experience in the peligic's?

I was a full-time mate on a busy charter boat...until I had to get a "normal" job. Man, do I miss it. I've been fishing offshore for 15 years. I have a friend with a charter boat that has a massive deck...we could probably set something up. I will run down this weekend to check on the boat and bounce that idea at him.

I don't know how many of you go out when its cold(water), but a lot of guys were gettin hit by the bluefin while they were striper/bluefishing within sight of land. I was planning on keeping an eye out for those reports and then driving to wherever that may be. A quick surf launch, short paddle out, hook up and land or release mr. bluefin(pics of course), and a short paddle back in. Wasn't that fun and easy? If any of you are interested in this but not quite sure...we have all summer to practice. Think about it.

I'm in for any trip you want to try. I don't have any experience with tuna
or how to fish for them. I have made a few long distance trips and they don't
scare me as long as I have spare batteries for the GPS.

I think we should set up a "JCKF Shoot for the Horizon" fish expedition.
There is safety in numbers so we'll get a group together. I have a few
buddies that would be happy to go with us by boat to assist with any
potential problems.

Any thoughts anyone???

I would LOVE to do that. Money's a little of an issue though. Willing to fish the cold water too.

Those bluefin in sight of the beach, that's off north jersey, right?

Yes, the tuna were perfect size. It's an Avet reel on a Shimano Trevala rod.

I picked up avet LX at the AC boat show last week. I spent over an hour with the east coast rep. I can't wait to use the reel. It's going to get used primarily for tuna jigging and tilefishing.

WOW!! TUNA!

That's what I am talking about!

Bluefin from the kayak without having to take a mothership. Man, that would score some mega kayak wars points. I'll have to incorporate that into the North-East region. I didn't think that was possible.
