(NEKF) Striper Shootout VI 2010By: Chris Parson
Kayak Fishing Magazine
The NEKF Striper Shootout action this year was red hot. The winning fish were much
larger than in years past. With the exception of the Saturday afternoon blow, the
weather cooperated all weekend long with sunny days and cool nights.
With a field of 140 fisherman (7 or 8 of which were fisherwomen) there was no shortage
of friends and the usual camaraderie that goes along with an event like this one. Five
straight days of wake up, fish real hard, crack jokes/bust chops, eat, sleep & repeat.
It was great to see so many of the friends that we have made over the years as well as
to meet a few new ones.

Park. We all received our identifiers, t-shirt and captain's bags and were permitted to
begin fishing. The event continued until the Sunday noon check-in deadline. This was a
catch, photo, release (CPR) event and our pictures were given to the event judges to be
scored.
Those that chose to fish areas with less light pollution were treated to a spectacular
meteor shower all night Friday. A small group of us traveled out to Great Misery and
then on to Satan island where it was super dark. We watched the steady streaks of green
and red everywhere. Awesome.
Without burning any local spots, we were hearing rumors of Bluefin Tuna 1/2 mile off of
the beach. Some of these fish were going 300 lbs. We considered sacrificing one of our
tourney fishing days to give the Tuna a go. After looking into acquiring the proper permits,
we learned that the permits are issued to the "vessel". Since our yaks are not "vessels" or
registered, permits were not possible. With a sigh, we decided that after our 9 hour drive
to Winter Island, we would stick to the original plan and enjoy the fishing there which
did not disappoint.
Frank Healy (Fly Guide) took first place with a 40" Striper. Frank reported that this
fish took him on a sleigh ride that included bumping into numerous boats, mooring lines,
and brought him face to face with an angry woman that was trying to sleep. I can see
Frank smiling as he explained to the woman that the commotion was the fishes idea. He
probably also asked her how she thinks that he should be handling the situation.

up coming TV show to be aired on the Versus Channel in the near future.
NEKF hosted another well run and fun event that I look forward to attending next year.
